Two Totals, One Reading: With and Without Spaces
Most tools hand you a single number. This one gives you two, because different platforms want different things. The with spaces total includes every letter, digit, punctuation mark, symbol, tab, and line break. The without spaces total strips all whitespace. Rather than guessing which rule a target field follows, both figures sit on screen at once — one scan, two answers.
What Actually Counts as a Character
Every letter, digit, punctuation mark, symbol, and accented letter counts as one character. A French “é”, a German “ü”, a Spanish “ñ”, a Polish “ł”, and a Danish “ø” each count as one. Emoji and mathematical symbols also count as one. Only spaces, tabs, and line breaks are excluded from the without-spaces figure. Images, charts, and diagrams contribute nothing, since they have no text layer to read.

Where the Count Has to Be Exact
A translator quoting from a source PDF. A client sends a 40-page brochure as a PDF and asks for a per-character rate. Translation is priced on the total — sometimes with spaces, sometimes without. Drop the file in, read both totals, and send the quote the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions
With spaces or without spaces — which total should I submit?
Check the field’s rule. Most CMS forms, social platforms, and compliance boxes mean with spaces. Style guides that say “letters only” or “alphanumeric” mean without spaces. Both totals are shown, so you can match whichever rule applies.
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character or two?
In this tool, each emoji and each accented letter (é, ü, ñ, ł, ø) counts as one. Some platforms count emoji as two. If the target field treats emoji strictly, verify the count on the platform itself before pasting.
Does the count include line breaks and tabs?
Line breaks and tabs are counted in the with spaces total, because they occupy a character position in most systems. In the without spaces total, they are stripped along with all other whitespace.
Why does Twitter or a CMS field show a different count than this tool?
Most platforms count Unicode code points, and a single emoji or a combined letter can be one or more code points. This tool follows the same character-for-character rule for standard text, so the totals usually match. Small gaps appear when a platform counts emoji or combined characters differently.
