Sort Text A to Z Online

Four alphabetical directions including Sort Z to A plus eleven specialised modes for the lists plain A–Z always gets wrong.

Every sorting tool on the internet solves exactly one problem: the easy one. Real lists are messier they mix “Sarah Connor” with “connor, sarah,” they number things item1 through item12, and they carry enough stray capital letters to ruin a plain sort text A to Z pass. This sorter was built around those exceptions first. Alphabetize a list in either direction, with or without case, then reach for the modes that rescue what A–Z can’t: natural order, surname order, frequency order. Paste on the left, the result appears on the right, and it leaves as copied text or a downloaded .txt file.

Quick Answer:

Drop your list into the left panel paste it, type it, or load a .txt file with the File button. Hit one of the fifteen sort buttons underneath. Your list appears in the right panel as it’s sorted, already counted: line and character totals sit in the corner. Undo is one step away if the wrong mode got clicked, and your original order stays intact behind the Reset button the whole time.

Detailed Features & Sort Mode Explanations

Sort Lines Alphabetically Case-Sensitive or Not

A strict alphabetical pass ranks capitals before lowercase, which is correct for indexes but surprises people holding mixed lists. Flip to ignore-case and “ketchup” no longer sinks below “Zebra” letters are compared on their own, nothing more. Four buttons cover both directions in both flavours, so the choice is always one click, never a settings hunt.

Sort Z to A Reverse Alphabetical Order

Most tools bury reverse order inside a dropdown. Here it’s a first-class button, in both case-sensitive and ignore-case forms. Any list that reads better backwards rankings, priority sheets, countdown material flips without touching its internal order.

Sort Names by Last Word (Surname Order)

“Priya Sharma” files under S, not P. This mode reads the final word of every line as its sort key, so full names order by surname while first names stay attached. Guest lists, class rosters, bibliographies anything looked up by family name settle into place without spreadsheet formulas or manual “Last, First” flipping.

Natural Sort When item2 Must Come Before item10

A plain sort reads digits one character at a time, so item10 beats item2. Natural sort reads numbers by value: Chapter 9 precedes Chapter 10, build logs read in real sequence, and anything mixing words with digits stops lying about its order. Both directions are available.

Frequency, Length & Word Count Modes

Most Frequent First groups identical lines and stacks the repeats on top a duplicate audit in a single pass, which is exactly what a messy keyword export needs before it goes anywhere else. Least Frequent First does the mirror image for spotting one-off entries. Shortest First / Longest First order lines by character count, and Sort by Word Count ranks lines by how many words each carries. Number Ascending / Descending handles rows that are pure values, pushing text-only lines to the bottom instead of breaking the run. Reverse Order simply walks your existing list backwards.

When This Sorter Earns Its Keep

A wedding or conference guest list where everyone typed their own name differently “Ahmed Raza,” “raza, ahmed,” “AHMED RAZA” that has to read as one clean surname order by tonight.

Bibliography entries pasted from three different sources, each with its own capitalisation habits, that must read as a single alphabetised list for a style guide.

A glossary or product catalogue where every heading has to sit in strict A–Z, checked line by line.

An SEO keyword export where the generator ignored case, so “Shop” and “shop” live in different clusters the frequency pass gathers every duplicate before the list moves on.

Numbered log entries or file listings where item10 must not parade around as smaller than item2.

Vocabulary sheets, word-game material, or readability checks that need words ordered by length or word count.

Two .txt files merged by hand that now carry repeated rows at the seams frequency-first ordering exposes every one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which button should I press for a plain alphabetical list?

Sort A → Z. If the list mixes “apple” and “Apple” and you’d rather they stand together, use the Ignore Case version it’s the safer everyday choice.

My list is names, not single words. What changes?

Use Sort by Last Word. It orders by the final word of each line, so “Priya Sharma” files under S. First names remain attached; nothing gets flipped or truncated.

Why did item10 jump ahead of item2 with normal A → Z?

Because a plain alphabetical comparison reads text character by character, and “1” beats “2.” Natural Sort reads the whole number, so item2, item3 … item10 fall into place. Reach for it whenever digits are attached to words.

What do the frequency buttons actually show me?

They group identical lines and stack the most repeated ones at the top or the rarest, if you pick Least Frequent First. It’s the fastest way to audit a long paste for duplicates.

Does the page keep what I typed?

Your current text is held in this browser tab and auto-saves locally, so a refresh won’t erase it. Nothing is sent to a server, and Clear wipes the saved copy too.

Can I use it on my phone?

Yes on smaller screens the two panels stack vertically and the fifteen mode buttons shrink into a compact grid, so the full tool works from a phone browser.

What file does Download produce?

A plain-text file named sorted-text.txt containing exactly what’s visible in the output panel line breaks preserved.
