This tool takes a plain block of text — a script’s dialogue, a contract’s clauses, a checklist, or any list broken across separate lines — and places a number at the start of every line that holds content. What is a line numbering tool?
A line numbering tool takes text broken across separate lines and adds a sequential number to the start of each one, the same way a code editor numbers lines down the left margin or a legal document numbers its clauses. Doing this by hand means counting lines, typing each number, and starting over if you insert or delete a line partway through. This tool does the counting and the typing for you — paste the text once, choose a format, and every line is renumbered correctly in one pass.
How it works
- Bring in your text. Type directly into the box on the left, drop in a .txt file, or use the Paste button to pull text straight from your clipboard.
- Choose how the lines should read. Pick one of the four built-in formats, or write your own pattern using letters, roman numerals, or any prefix you like.
- Take the numbered version with you. Click Add Line Numbers, then copy the result to your clipboard or download it as a plain text file.
If your pasted text has stray blank lines scattered through it, use Remove Empty Lines first to strip them out — that way your final numbering runs in an unbroken sequence instead of leaving gaps where the blank lines used to be.

Everything happens in your browser
No copy of your text is sent anywhere. Line Number Adder counts lines, tracks your undo steps, and keeps a working draft entirely through JavaScript running on your own machine. If your connection drops or the tab closes mid-edit, nothing is lost — your most recent input sits in your browser’s local storage until you clear it, ready to reappear the next time you open the page.

Frequently asked questions
Does this tool number blank lines?
No. A blank line is skipped rather than counted, so gaps in your original text stay as gaps instead of taking up a number of their own.
Can I renumber text that already has numbers in it?
Yes. If your text already starts with a period, brackets, dashes, or parentheses around a number, the tool removes that old numbering first and applies the new format cleanly, so you don’t end up with “1. 1. First line”.
Will my text be saved anywhere online?
No. The whole process runs locally in your browser through JavaScript. Your text is held only in that browser’s local storage, on your own device, and is never sent to a server.
Can I start numbering from something other than 1?
Yes. Set a value in the Start At field before you number your lines, which is useful when a list is continuing from an earlier document or an earlier section of the same one.
What happens if I close the tab by accident?
Nothing is lost. Your last input is saved as you type, so reopening the page brings it straight back. Text only clears once you press Clear and confirm.
