Remove Line Breaks

Paste text that breaks in the middle of sentences and get clean, flowing paragraphs back, or squash the whole thing onto a single line.

Paste a paragraph into a Word file, an email or a form field and every line ends where the original column ended, not where the sentence does. “The committee agreed to postpone the / decision until the next quarter / review” arrives as three short lines, and the text never reflows however wide you make the page. Those breaks are real characters, so they won’t disappear on their own. This tool removes line breaks from the text and joins the pieces back into proper paragraphs, or into one single line when that’s what you need. Paste or load your text and the result is ready in the Output box, with your original left untouched beside it.

Quick Answer

To remove line breaks online, paste your text into the Input box. Text you paste or load from a file is cleaned straight away. If you typed it, click “Remove Line Breaks” or press Ctrl+Enter. “Keep ¶” joins the lines inside each paragraph and leaves the paragraphs apart. “Single ¶” strips every line break and gives you one line. Then copy the result.

How to Remove Newlines from Text

Put the Text In
Click Paste to take it from your clipboard, or File to load a text file. You can also drag a file onto the box or type directly. Pasted and loaded text is processed immediately.

Choose the Shape of the Result
“Keep ¶” is the default and keeps paragraphs separate. Switch to “Single ¶” for one continuous line. The “Join hyphenated” box decides whether words split by a hyphen at the end of a line are rejoined.

Copy the Output
Press Copy, or Download to save it as a text file. If you change a setting after the first run, click “Remove Line Breaks” again so the Output box catches up.

Key Features

Two Output Shapes
“Keep ¶” joins the lines of each paragraph and leaves a gap between paragraphs. “Single ¶” runs everything together as one paragraph on one line.

Rejoins Split Words
With “Join hyphenated” on, a word cut by a hyphen at the end of a line, such as inter- and national, comes back as international.

Soft Hyphens Removed
The invisible hyphens that PDFs and word processors hide inside words are taken out of the result.

Runs on Paste and Upload
Paste or load a file and the output appears without another click. Typed text needs the button or Ctrl+Enter.

Every Line-Ending Style
Breaks from Windows, Mac and Unix systems, plus Unicode line and paragraph separators, are all recognized.

Counts That Double as a Check
Lines, words and characters show for both boxes. The Output line count is 1 in “Single ¶” mode and equals your paragraph count in “Keep ¶”.

Original Stays Put
The result goes to its own box, so your pasted text stays in the Input box to adjust and run again.

Private by Design
The text is processed in your browser and never uploaded.

What Is a Line Break Remover?

A line break remover, also called a newline remover or a text line break cleaner, deletes the invisible characters that tell a computer to start a new line. There are two kinds of line ending in text. A soft wrap is only how an app displays a long line, and it changes as the window resizes. A hard break is an actual newline character stored in the text, and that’s what this tool removes. Hard breaks end up in the middle of sentences when text is wrapped to a fixed width, as in a PDF column, a plain-text email or an OCR scan. Removing them restores the paragraph, so the text can flow into whatever width the next app gives it.

When Would You Use This?

You copied a passage out of a PDF article, and each line stops where the page column stopped. Paste it here and the lines join back into paragraphs.

A plain-text email arrived wrapped at about 70 characters per line, and you want to remove the line breaks before quoting it in a document.

You scanned a printed page with OCR, and every printed line came out as its own line of text.

A search box, a form field or a spreadsheet cell takes only a single line. Switch to “Single ¶” to convert multiline text to a single line.

You’re preparing a long prompt, a translation request or a caption and want one clean paragraph instead of a ragged column.

You paste into Word and every line gets its own paragraph mark. Join the lines into a paragraph first, then paste the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it always give me a single line?

Only in “Single ¶” mode. The default, “Keep ¶”, joins the lines inside each paragraph but keeps paragraphs apart. The tool recognizes a paragraph by a blank line between two blocks of text. If your paragraphs sit on consecutive lines with no blank line between them, they merge into one. A bulleted list is treated the same way and becomes one long line.

What does “Join hyphenated” do, and when could it go wrong?

It removes a hyphen at the end of a line and attaches the next word, so “inter-” followed by “national” becomes “international”. It only looks at English letters (a to z), and it can’t tell a split word from a real hyphen. “well-” at the end of a line followed by “known” becomes “wellknown”. Switch it off for text with many real hyphens. Soft hyphens, the invisible kind, are removed either way.

Does it change anything besides the line breaks?

A little. Non-breaking spaces become ordinary spaces, repeated spaces shrink to one, and invisible zero-width characters are deleted. That includes the zero-width non-joiner used in Urdu and Persian to keep letters from joining, so check text in those languages afterwards. Lines are always joined with a single space, which is fine for English but not for Chinese or Japanese, where words aren’t separated by spaces.

Can I remove the line breaks from a PDF file itself?

Not from the file directly. The tool works on text. Open the PDF, select and copy the text, then paste it in. The File button accepts text files such as .txt, .md, .csv, .json and .log.

I switched modes and the Output didn’t change. Why?

Pasting or loading a file runs the tool automatically, but changing “Keep ¶”, “Single ¶” or the “Join hyphenated” box doesn’t. Click “Remove Line Breaks” again, or press Ctrl+Enter in the Input box, and the Output updates.
